I'd be more inclined to drop the 'League' bit and prefix 'Rugby' with some superlative and then hammer that name home with a huge and never ending PR.



That would eventually get the RU authorities in a knicker twist as their attempts to hijack the word 'Rugby' gets gazumped. They've successfully pinched the 'Rugby World Cup' title from us and anyone who thinks their persistent use of the word rugby, without the Union bit, is anything but an attempt to cut RL out is just being naive.

Don't forget that Association Football "hijacked" the term "football", or by necessity of its populiarty became the code of football above Aussie Rules Football, Gaelic Football, Rugby Football League, Rugby Football Union, etc...



By removing the term Rugby from the name of our sport, it might as well become the sport known only by [ivia negativa[/i.

No chance. You could only do something like that if the sport was really popular and people were calling it that anyway.



I'm a fan of both codes but I always make a point of calling it the rugby union world cup. Or if both the England union and league teams have played on the same day and someone asks me if I watched the England rugby game, I always ask whether they mean the union game or the league game.
