Got to be more selective when buying the older player, can't see anything but a positive of buying the next John Hos Cartwright as he without doubt brought a great deal to the team but then you get some of the free loaders who have signed up to the Salford has beens benevolent fund over the years (Gary Jack on the second comeing anyone??)
What we need to do if this is the road we are going down is identify where we have talented youungsters who would benefit from learning from a master in that position (as i'm sure the young forwards we have on staff at present would do if another Cartwright came along).
This is easier said than done but that is what Steve Simms is paid his salary for.

| Quote In EnemyTerritory="In EnemyTerritory"My interest in Myler has not piqued in the last 6 months as I have in fact watched the lad for a good couple of years going back to his academy days with Widnes and was disappointed that he was never properly given a chance in the first team.
He has had that chance now and done well out of it but from watching his development he would have been the player he is now at any club he joined.. Widnes, Salford, Workington, Keighley, Leeds, Saints. His guile and speed of thought have always been in evidence as has his bossiness that is often needed of a good-half-back. You say that natural talent does not make you consistent but I would argue that is not true. If anything natural talent is what gives you these things.. the ability to perform at a high level with ease.
The only thing different now is that he has had a little more exposure.
You can be forgiven for thinking that you have honed the lad into the star he is now as the first you probably heard of him was when he signed on your dotted line, but you only need to go over to the Widnes board to see how highly he was regarded as a player and how disappointed we were to lose him.
The major difference at Warrington now from back then is the culture... Smith has demanded changes and been given the freedom to carry them out whereas Cullen asked for them and was rejected and Lowes... well that speaks for itself and you know enough about Lowes yourselves.'"
With regard to a few exceptions, raw talent does not a complete player make.
I've played pro RL and without a shadow of a doubt I have seen a few players that, with the right people around them, would have been world class. They didn't become that because they were managed poorly off the field/were not nurtured correctly/just self-imploded. What a lot of supporters don't realise is what actually goes on behind the scenes. A good club will see that this does not happen. Like I said, Myler is a talent, but I don't know the man. Some people can be awsome talents but their nature or surroundings impact on their being making them just another name. We don't know if Myler is better than that, I hope he is, We have needed a natural HB in International colours for far too long.
As for Widnes...Well...It proves the point that Myler will choose to further his career, which means that he will leave the Willows if History should repeat itself. I actually think that Myler leaving may (and I say that with great optimism) be better for us in the long and short term.

| Find it a little strange that people are so horrified that we can lose Myler & are demanding justice for our hard work in nurturing the lad. Lest we forget, Richie joined us only 18 months ago when Widnes hit the skids so we can hardly claim to be solely responsible for the player's burgeoning talent. Also given that Myler, completely understandably, chose to concentrate on his fledgling career rather than offer any loyalty to his home-town club, can we really be so surprised if he takes a mega-bucks offer rather than pledge his long-term future to a club that must be under serious threat of its Super League place in 2 years time due to the continued silence over the stadium?
Naturally I'd love Richie to stay at Salford & be a key player for many, many years to come but I just can't see it. Now if we lose Adamson and/or Ratchford as well, then I'll be seriously p****d off!

I agree.
I was just arguing the point that the Club has done a little more than stuff him into a No. 7 jersey.
I don't begrudge the lad a shot at something bigger. I'd love for him to stay, but RL is a short career at best so he should do what he feels is best for his future. I wont condone him for that, and everything he has done for the club so far.
I see the opportunity as a few quid made, and as long as it is invested wisely, I have no problem with it. After all, we are a club that needs these kind of financial boosts to further the next level.
We have to realistic.

In a way I completely agree with you...
If he does stay and signs another contract I get the feeling that you will be in the unfavourable position where every now and again it is rumoured that he will be leaving and I think you're best rid of a player that Offiah see's as a means of him making more money.
I think it was unfair to the club to have publicly stated the kings ransom thing but at least we all know what type of a man Offiah continues to be.
I said above and strongly believe that Stefan Ratchfords your man. With Myler out the picture I think this guy will kick on!! Without wanting to get too far ahead it's far more likely that this guy will become a Salford legend and do it for the love of the club rather than the lure of the money.
Best of luck with it all anyway.

I agree with you on this one
Stefan is one of our own (although he comes from Wigan) he has come through the youth system and is Salford through and through.
I would be seriously pi$$ed of to lose our players brought through the ranks.
Richie Myler has unfortunately not come through the system so probably will not have as much affinity with the club as many of the other younger players.
Unfortunately I am biased when it comes to Salford (surprise ,surprise) and can not understand why anyone would want to leave .
Finally how about Turner/Ratchford for a half back combination if Richie does leave.

| I have great sympathy for Salford here as they clearly gave Myler the pathway into SL,sadly nowadays this counts for jack, and i believe that he will leave at the end of the season to the highest contract bidder,at least whilst Myler is still under contract, you will at least get a fee for him
