| The name has had no adverse effects on either;
-The crowds
-The team
-The marketing
-The national identity
I call us Wigan RLFC, but my Aussie mates call us the Warriors. The argument is only valid from a personal standpoint. The list above shows why the 'Warriors' brand has worked (or not affected anything at least)

| this should be an easy solution; offere fans the chance too choose what they want on there shirt wigan rl or wigan warriors see which one sells better. Every one's happy then? But i don't see the advantage of the warriors tag if for example nissan or any other company was to pay us money to have the tag then i would.

| Obviously, I detest the fake name we are saddled with.
The club 'belongs' to the fans, regardless of temporary owners, coaches, players etc. The fans should be allowed to decide on what to many, including me, is a serious and important issue.
I would like to see a concerted effort by the current ownership to find out what the fans think about this. The straw poll at that meeting a few years ago was a poor attempt. Printed forms at the next couple of home and away matches, street canvassing, postal polling of registered fans are all ways that could be combined to produce a comprehensive and accurate verdict.
The marketing question is an interesting one. I am sure the current marketing team could find plenty of positives in a return to 'tradition' for next season. The current naff American/Australian tag is not, in fact, actually 'marketed' as a concept in any way, is it? It's just a word that starts with the same letter as Wigan, that is printed on everything the club sells, putting off the traditionalists from buying stuff. Even Max the mascot is not really 'sold' as anything in particular. He might as well be a big teddy bear or something.
Very few of the current rugby league club nicknames are actually used by fans at all, are they? I have never heard any fans at Warrington refer to the Wolves, for example, or Wakefield fans chanting for Wildcats. Arguably, it's only Leeds fans ( ) who use their American-style name to any great degree...and Bradford a bit, perhaps. Must be a Yorkshire thing, though Hudds fans still chant the name of their former ground, for some reason.
Tradition is important...let's recognise that at Wigan by at least making a proper effort at respecting it.

| Personally, I think it's an excellent marketing tool. Of the nicknames in Super League, I think it's the best one (coming from a non-Wigan point of view). It rolls off the tongue far better than something like 'Rhinos' and yet that has become synonymous with Leeds rugby league and their fans.
I'm all for tradition, but I have found that a lot of Rugby League fans would walk around with a club and drag their wife by the hair if you traced it back well enough. Sometimes you have to move forward.

| I personally don't like the Warriors tag but I wouldn't like it to be removed. The club have spent a lot on branding etc and that would be a loss.
If you don't like it you can always say Wigan RLFC or Wigan Rugby or what ever you fancy saying!

About 75% of our fanbase are over the age of 14. Therefore, if season ticket holders were to do a poll, im willing to bet the majority would want it removed. If Mr Lenegan liked the name Warriors, I dont think he would have done a poll to see who was for and against it personally.

| The Warrior tag was added to comply with Super League and it's been pretty useless since.
Other than mascots, when have we used the Warrior name for marketing or for our image? We have no affiliation with the tag, we don't use it and to be honest it's inevitable that it will eventually go one day.
Get rid now.

That was quite true. At one time if you said you supported/watched Wigan they knew you meant the Rugby. If you were a football fan of the Wigan club you supported Latics.
I'm not 100% convinced that the same applies now though.
Personally I would drop the Warriors tag, but as quite a few have said, the kids appear to like it and they are the future of the club.

| Christ almighty. Who honestly gives a rats ar4e?
It's not doing any harm. Whether you call the club Wigan RL if you're a 'traditionalist' (what the feck is a traditionalist?) or whether you call the club Wigan Warriors if you're a young kid it really, really does not matter.
The 'Warriors' tag is a gimic to market the club at young kids. Max the Warrior is all about marketing to the next generation of fans. When I was a kid I used to call the club Wigan Warriors, I used to go to 'Kelvin's club', I used to go the summer camps and subsequently I now follow Wigan home and away and will probably have a season ticket for the rest of my life. And yet I'll never call us 'Wigan Warriors' again, but I repeat - who cares?
It works from a marketing perspective - What's the problem?

I can't recall the club using anything to do external ''Warriors'' when marketing the club, even with kids.
Our main marketing key is almost always our tradition & history.

Well, them as don't (care) about this should clearly be happy to stand quietly to one side while them as does care get on with campaigning for what they care about...
...the tradition and heritage that Wigan rugby is built on and the removal of an unnecessary nickname that turns the great name of the club into a cheap and nasty advertising slogan that has no relevance and no basis except toe-curling alliteration.

I hate it but you couldnt be more wrong.

Just open the official website and the new marketing campaign for season tickets says 'Warriors together'.
The website spent all last season going through our squad with images saying '(insert name) is a Warrior, are you?'
The logo' for the community foundation etc. are all based around 'Warriors'.
The list could go on.
The club would need to have a huge rebrand of the club during the off-season with huge ANNOUNCEMENTS to catch attention, this in itself could have a huge impact and get more fans in and get us noticed. This campaign could include a seriously retro shirt design, a return to the old crest, and slogans about our history.
I think the name change could work and along with a proper campagin could actually be ALOT more succesful than our average season ticket campaigns, especially if it was on the back of a trophy winning season. The next round of franchise applications could be the perfect opportunity IMO.
Studying marketing at Uni, my current dream job is to be head of marketing at Wigan, I will get it done
